The Japanese designer was born in 1942 in Osaka where he studied industrial design at Naniwa College. In 1967, he opened up a design studio in his native city. Just five years later, his chair “WINK” was selected for the permanent collection of MoMA, New York. Kita’s designs are characterised by a mix of western forms and Japanese handicrafts, revealing a fascination with both tradition and new technologies. Toshiyuki Kita has received numerous honours and prizes such as the Japan Interior Designers Association Award, the German IF Top Ten Award and the gold prize of the Good Design Award. He has served on many design juries, his works have been shown worldwide in various exhibitions and he has taught at several schools in Japan and abroad. Toshiyuki Kita lives and works in Osaka and Milan.
