Saucier + Perrote
2006 Governor General’s Medals in Architecture for The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical physics
D.B., November 2, 2006
Riding the line between public and private space, the Perimeter institute for Theoretical Physics, a private research institute, questions the usual hard thresholds established by private enterprise in the public realm. The building defines the secure zones of the Institute's facilities within a series of parallel walls, embedded in an erupting ground plane. Located between the city and the park, the Perimeter Institute expands and inhabits the improbable space of the line that separates the two. The design is inspired by the nebulous spaces occupied by the subjects of theoretica physics, at once micro- and macro-cosmic, rich in information and of indeterminate form and substance.

Saucier + Perrotte. Formed in 1988, Saucier + Perrotte quickly became internationally recognized for designing cultural buildings. Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte combine architecture, urban and interior design to create buildings “intended to be seen, experienced and felt.” Elisabetta Terragni and Kurt Forster, director of the Venice Biennale in Architecture, describe Saucier + Perrotte’s work as “architecture that takes shape as a collective image extracted from-and reembedded in-the land of which it has become a permanent part.”
