Nendo (representative Naoki Sato) is a design office with a growing reputation, in Japan and abroad for its work across a broad spectrum of genres from architecture to interiors, product design, and graphics. The firm presents a new chair (Cabbage Chair) made from a waste paper byproduct from the PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE manufacturing process.

Oki Sato was born in Toronto, Canada, and obtained his Master’s degree at WasedaUniversity in 2002. In that same year he set up the Nendo agency, and busied himself with several projects which combined criticism and involved mind-games, while at the same beingnoteworthy products where quality was concerned. Drawer House (2003) thus perfectlyillustrates the hyper-functionality sought by Sato in city housing. This fierce quest for rationality also recurs in Book House (2005), which manages to offer a very poetic outward appearance.

Nendo has designed a new chair made of waste paper from the pleated fabric industry. The paper is wrapped into a cylinder and cut vertically half way so you can peel it one layer at a time. The chair was designed for the XXIst Century Man exhibition which will be at 21_21 Design Sight in Tokyo from 30 March to 6 July 2008. To make the paper more durable resins were added during production. They also give paper the ability to remember forms, and the pleats themselves give the chair elasticity and a springy resilience, giving the seater a comfortable experience. The production is so simple it may not be long till we are able to buy it.
